As it's getting close to polling day, I thought it was time to stir things up a bit.

Considering that the Conservative Party are as far removed from the teachings of Jesus as it is possible to be, is voting Conservative a tenable position for a christian?

To my mind the answer is no as, IMO, they stand for greed, selfishness, exploitation, and generally have an "I'm alright, so sod you" philosophy.

Any thoughts?

Winnie.

I think you can call yourself a Christian and vote for any of the main parties and some of the more minor ones. I doubt you could be a Christian and vote BNP though. However there is a so called clergy person, Rev West, who is a spokesman for the BNP. I doubt any mainstream denomination would care to have him as one of their number. His statements are as fascist as those of his evil party.

But surely from God's perspective it makes no difference whether you villify someone on account of their skin colour or exploit someone's labour so that you can make an exhorbitant profit, it all amounts to sin?

Yeah ... agreed

Indeed so! He is the BNP candidate for Lincoln in the upcoming elections. He is NOT an ordained minister, as far as can be ascertained the title is one he has entirely conferred upon himself ... which brings significant doubt on his personal integrity, let alone his 'Christian' credentials.

As I said, surely from God's perspective it makes no difference whether you vote BNP and villify someone on account of their skin colour or are a die-hard Thatcherite and exploit someone's labour, paying them a paltry wage so that you can make an exhorbitant profit, it all amounts to sin?

Discuss.

Not all conservative employers exploit their labour by any means. My father was an arch conservative in spirit, although he didn't live in the UK. The staff he employed were treated well.

I have never joined a political party, simply because I don't think any of them can be said to be THE Christian party (including The Christian Party - more like UKIP with hymnbooks...) There are some policies and principles which are compatible with Christian faith, and some which aren't. I'd agree with WTP that the BNP is completely out of order for Christians (although there is a debate on a Methodist friend's blog in which a Christian is defending that cause); I would also agree that Conservative policies are exploitative - capitalism depends on the assumption that money is more important than people. Sadly, I know a lot of Christians who do vote Tory, and I have to say that the recent years of Labour administration have been more Tory than I'd have liked - the red flag is decidedly pale these days...

I think the truth is that we live in an untidy political world, and Christians have to make compromises when they vote, accepting somethings they don't want in order to aim for the things they do want - justice, peace, and a community which nurtures and enables its members to live together in harmony.
