'The event is a celebration of trade "based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity."'

By Andrew Chapman

Saturday 14 May is World Fair Trade Day - what's it all about and how can you get involved?

The event is a celebration of international fair trade, ie trade 'based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity.'

The fair trade movement supports sustainable development through improving working conditions, removing obstacles to poorer people who have been economically disadvantaged, and to increase the independence of producers across the world. The movement affirrms the equal rights of women and men, and right for everyone to have a safe and health working environment without exploitation.

World Fair Trade Day is organised by the International Fair Trade Association, a network of over 270 fair trade organisations across 60 countries. Around 65% of its member countries are in the southern hemisphere, where poverty and economic disadvantage are particularly problematic.

Events are taking place across the world to celebrate the day, which this year takes the theme "Fair Trade is Peace". Here are a few in the UK alone:

Fair Trade Media Store Launch
Fair Trade Media is an organisation using the arts and music to promote fair trade; on World Fair Trade Day, it is launching an online store.

Fair Trade Fashion Show World

Sust! 10% off day
Sust! is a fair trade organisation in Milton Keynes - fair trade products will be available for 10% off at the shop on World Fair Trade Day.

Fashion made Fair
This is a special sale of fair trade fashion held by People Tree in Brick Lane, London, from Friday 13 May to Sunday 15 May.
